Amnesty Press Release – August 31, 2025

Responding to President Prabowo Subianto's press conference today (31/08) and the earlier order by the chief of police to shoot on sight with rubber bullets any protesters attacking police headquarters, Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid said:

"Labelling public demonstrations with accusations of treason or terrorism is excessive, especially if it is continuously conveyed with the narrative of 'foreign interference' and 'spreading conflict' when people are demonstrating to voice their aspirations regarding problematic government policies. The president's statement is insensitive to all the complaints and aspirations the people have been voicing during the demonstrations.

The end of August was marked by the widespread anger of the people. Spreading to various points, hundreds of thousands of people took control of the streets to protest the policies and character of the regime of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka and the House of Representatives (DPR), which have used their power to unilaterally raise lawmakers' incomes by hundreds of millions of rupiah per month and living luxuriously in the midst of the crisis experienced by the ordinary people.

Rolando Fransiscus Sihombing, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has said that the current situation is chaotic and that it is leading towards makar (treason, subversion, rebellion) and terrorism. He has requested that the perpetrators be dealt with firmly.

"Once again, the pure aspirations being conveyed must be respected. The right to gather peacefully must be respected and protected. But we cannot deny that symptoms have begun to appear that there are actions outside of the law, even against the law, and some even leading to makar and terrorism", said Prabowo.

Kediri – The Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) building and a police station in Kediri, East Java, were set on fire by unknown individuals on Saturday evening August 30. The fires appeared to be blazing brightly with flames soaring high into the sky.

Initially, thousands of protesters dressed in all black held a demonstration in front of the Kediri city District Police (Polres) station where there gave short speeches before throwing objects at police officers, including Molotov cocktails.
