Moksa Hutasoit, Jakarta – After conducting a 1-year-study, the Public Examination Board (MEP) looking into the murder of human rights activists Munir has released a number of recommendations to the police, Attorney General’s Office and the courts. One of these is that the Munir case be reinvestigated.

The recommendations were conveyed by MEP member Frans Hendra Winata at a press conference at the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) offices on Jl. Latuharhary in Central Jakarta on Tuesday February 9.

In its recommendation to the national police the MEP urged the police to immediately reinvestigate and re-question the parties suspected of having a direct as well as indirect involvement in the murder.

Second, they appealed to the police to use the results of the Munir Fact Finding Team as preliminary material to develop the case further.

Third, the police need to conduct direct supervision of and provide guidelines to its officials in carrying out a reinvestigation into the Munir case.

Following on from this, the recommendations for the AGO is that it must appoint a public prosecutor that will take the case seriously as well as pay close attention to the integrity of prosecutors.

The final recommendation for the courts was a request that the heads of legal institutions appoint judges who have integrity and are proficient in criminal and human rights laws.

“This public examination report was produced as one form of the responsibly in the execution of the function, mission and authority that was mandated to us by Komnas HAM,” said Frans.

Frans was accompanied by the chairperson of the MEP into the Munir murder case, Soetandyo Wigjosoebroto, and several other members of the board including Mudzakkir, Fajrul Falaakh and Rudi Rizki, as well as Komnas HAM chairperson Ifdhal Kasim. (aan/iy)
