Bandung – The Bandung municipal government (Pemkot) in West Java has declared its support for the drafting of a prohibition in the form of a regional regulation (Perda) against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT).

Earlier, the Bandung Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) said that it was planning a draft regional regulation on the prevention and prohibition of LGBT. The discourse was inspired by the aspirations of community groups who have given input.

Bandung Mayor Yana Mulyana expressed his support for the move. “I of course agree because aside from violating religious norms, it also [violates] legal norms”, said Mulyana at the Arcamanik Youth Sports Centre on Tuesday January 24.

In terms of the process towards enacting the regulation, said Mulyana, it will be returned to the authorised party, namely members of the Bandung DPRD.

“But, all of this we will return to the respected [lawmakers] at the DPRD because the legislation process takes place there”, he said.

If the regulation has been agreed to, Mulyana said that they were ready to contribute to jointly drafting an academic text. “If the regulation has been agreed to, we can draft an academic text together”, he said. (hyg/wis)
