Jakarta – The Civil Society Coalition for Police Reform has recorded that around 400 demonstrators are still being detained by police.

"400 of them are still being detained and they are still in detention", said Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR) Deputy Director Maidina Rahmawati at a press conference on Monday September 15.

He said the Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) has recorded that the 400 people being detained were among the approximately 1,000 people arrested during a series of demonstrations at the end of August.

"We, also friends from the Coalition in the Advocacy Team for Democracy, also collected data showing that a total of around 1,000 people were arrested", she said.

In addition to this, Rahmawati said that during the demonstrations the other day, more than a thousand people had to be rushed to hospital due to alleged brutal actions by police officers.

Rahmawati also highlighted the legal assistance process, which she said had been hampered. She claimed there were restrictions regarding access to provide legal assistance.

A series of large-scale demonstrations took place from late August to early September 2025. The demonstrations demanded the cancellation of House of Representatives (DPR) members' housing allowance. The demonstrations escalated after Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver, was run over and killed by a police paramilitary Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle in Jakarta.

In response, six government Indonesian human rights institutions have formed an independent team to investigate the August demonstrations. (mn/dal)
