Kediri – The Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) building and a police station in Kediri, East Java, were set on fire by unknown individuals on Saturday evening August 30. The fires appeared to be blazing brightly with flames soaring high into the sky.

Initially, thousands of protesters dressed in all black held a demonstration in front of the Kediri city District Police (Polres) station where there gave short speeches before throwing objects at police officers, including Molotov cocktails.

The local police officers that were on guard used a water canon in an effort to disperse the crowd. The situation however only heated up when the masses shifted to the north and began vandalising vehicles. A total of four police cars were damaged and three motorbikes burned.

The protesters then shifted to the Kediri city DPRD on Jalan Mayor Bismo where they pelted the council building with stones then set fire to it. According to monitoring at the location, the blue coloured building was scorched by the fire and the flames soured high into the air.

In addition to these two places, the Kediri city Police Traffic Unit (Satlantas) offices on Jalan Brawijaya was also burned by the demonstrators with a fire seen burning on the west side of the office.

Currently the protesters can be seen starting to leave the Kediri city and moving to the Kediri regency. (frd/wiw)
