Satrio Adi Putranto, Jakarta – The Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) supports designating the spread of lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer (LGBTQ) culture as a non-military threat. This designation is contained in Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 111/2025 on General National Defence Policy 2025-2029.
"I think it's great yeah, and indeed we in our country don't acknowledge that issue [LGBTQ]", said Gerindra Party spokesperson Bahtra Banong at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday July 7.
He believes that Gerindra Party Chairperson President Prabowo Subianto's decision to include the spread of LGBTQ as a non-military threat was very correct. Therefore, his party will support the central government's decision.
Regarding the discourse on criminal regulations related to LGBTQ, which some parties consider to have the potential to violate human rights (HAM), Banong believes that this discussion still needs a more in-depth study. He reiterated however that Indonesia has never accepted LGBTQ ideology.
"But what is certain is that it is not allowed in our country. So I think for example if it exists there should be penalties, a further punishment, then maybe there would be a more in-depth study", said Banong.
As has been reported, President Prabowo signed Perpres Number 111/2025 on October 24 last year. The classification of the spread of LGBTQ culture as a form of non-military threat is stated in the attachment to the regulation.
