President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s inaugural speech on Tuesday triggered a round of criticism from experts and civil society groups with most highlighting the needs for him to realise his promises.

In his speech Yudhoyono said he would continue to practice ‘free and active politics, fighting for justice and world peace’, prompting critics to note that given the country’s atrocious human rights record the president needs to focus on domestic issues rather than emphasise building a democratic and peaceful world.
