Opposing the elections, students burn political party flags

Didi Syafirdi, Jakarta – Scores of students held a demonstration in the Megaria area of Central Jakarta on January 20 opposing the 2009 general elections. During the action the students even set fire to political party flags.

The 50 or so students from the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Student Community and the Bung Karno University began the action at the Proclamation Monument then moved of to Megaria.

During the march, they use spray paint to write graffiti on several houses reading “Reject the 2009 elections”.

At the Megaria intersection they distributed leaflets, the contents of which urged the public not to take part in the 2009 elections saying that the elections will only give birth two new oppressors.

They also set fire to political party flags including flags belonging to the Democrat Party, the United Development Party, the Patriot Party and the National Mandate Party.
