Indra Wijaya, Banda Aceh – Hundreds of workers who are members of the Aceh Labour Alliance (ABA) held a convoy on Friday May 1 from the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque (MRB) via the Aceh Provincial Legislative Council (DPRA) and ending at the Aceh governor's office.

They action was held to commemorate International Labor Day or May Day 2026. The workers had gathered at the MRB since 8.30 am and began the convoy of two- and four-wheeled vehicles at 9.30 am.

The workers stopped at the DPRA office for about five minutes to convey the aims of the action.

ABA Chairperson Drs. Tgk. Syaiful Mar conveyed a number of demands from the workers during the commemoration of Labor Day at the Aceh province level. One of the main points was demanding a significant increase in the Aceh provincial minimum wage (UMP) each year.

According to Syaiful, increasing the UMP is important because the conditions in Aceh cannot be compared to other provinces in Indonesia. He emphasised that the specificities of Aceh as regulated under Law Number 11/2006 on Aceh Governance must be the basis for determining employment policies.

Aside from this, the ABA also asked that outsourcing practices no longer be applied in Aceh. This is because most of the companies in the area are medium scale, and only a few are classified as large companies.

"We hope that employers and the Aceh government will be present to help workers and labourers in the field", said Syaiful. He added that with around 6,664 companies, the majority of which are small, the problem of poverty and unemployment should be able to be reduced.

The ABA also urged the Aceh government to immediately revoke Gubernatorial Regulation (Pergub) Number 2/2006 which is considered detrimental to society. They claim to have an agreement with Regency Legislative Councils (DPRK) that this regulation needs to be abolished.

On the other hand, Syaiful requested that the Aceh UMP, which has been set at 3.96 million rupiah a month, be fully implemented by all companies. He emphasised the importance of the active role of the government, especially the Labour Office, in conducting direct supervision in the field.

"The government should not just wait for reports, but must be proactive. Workers are often afraid to report", he said.

During a series of Labor Day commemorations that will be held over two weeks, the ABA will also hold social activities such as blood donations. This activity is expected to involve various agencies and the wider community to help people in need.
