Jakarta – Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) Deputy External Coordinator Andrie Yunus is reported to be in reasonably good condition and is continuing to adapt to the injuries he sustained after being doused with acid by soldiers from the Indonesian Militar (TNI) Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) on March 12, 2026.

His state of health was revealed in a letter written by Yunus and read aloud by Jane Rosalina, the head of the impunity monitoring division at Kontras, during a "5th Anniversary of the IM57+ Institute" event at the Usmar Ismail Film Centre in Jakarta on Friday evening October 2.

At the event, Yunus received an award recognising his dedication and contributions to the anti-corruption movement, democracy and human rights values.

Regarding anti-corruption efforts, Yunus along with others including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are currently challenging the decision by President Prabowo Subianto to grant the title of national hero to former president Suharto in a case that has been filed with the Jakarta State Administrative Court (PTUN).

"My condition at the moment is I feel reasonably well, at the very least I am endeavouring to adapt to the injuries I sustained following the acid attack last March", said Rosalina reading out Yunus' letter.

Rosalina said that Andrie is still undergoing routine treatment with the team of doctors currently attending to him.

"In the near future, I will also undergo further surgery on areas of the wounds that have developed contractures, which are hindering my range of motion", Rosalina said.

"I ask for your prayers for strength and for the process to go smoothly", she continued, reading from Andrie's letter.

TNI soldiers verdict

Yunus was doused with acid by BAIS TNI soldiers on the night of March 12 after recording a podcast at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office titled "Remilitarisation and Judicial Review of the TNI Law".

The four TNI soldiers who committed the attack and were tried in court were Defendant I Second Sergeant Edi Sudarko, Defendant II First Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Defendant III Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetyo and Defendant IV First Lieutenant Sami Lakka.

On Wednesday June 10, the panel of judges at the Jakarta Military Court II-08 found the defendants guilty and sentenced them various prison terms.

Defendant I was sentenced to three years in prison, while Defendant II was sentenced to two years and six months in prison. Defendants I and II threw the acid at Yunus.

Meanwhile, Defendant III was sentenced to two years in prison and Defendant IV was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.

Furthermore, the judges imposed an additional penalty on Defendants I and II in the form of dismissal from military service.

However, the defendants' sentences were reduced on appeal, and the additional penalty of dismissal was revoked.

Sudarko was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, Widhi was sentenced to two years in prison, Prasetyo was sentenced to two years in prison and Lakka was sentenced to one year and six months in prison. (ryn/kid)
