Electability of Jokowi's ruling PDI-P, Gerindra Party slumps: Survey

Haryanti Puspa Sari, Jakarta – The results of a survey conducted by the Vox Populi Research Center on the electability of political parties at the start of 2021 has found that the electability of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) have experienced a sharp decline.

The Vox Populi survey found that the PDI-P's electability dropped from 33.5 percent in June 2020 to 31.3 percent in October and to 19.6 percent in January 2021.

A similar decline was experienced by the Gerindra Party whose electability declined from 14.1 percent in June 2020 to 13.9 percent in October and 9.3 percent in January 2021.

"The slump in the PDI-P and Gerindra's electability saw [respondents] fleeing from them and choosing golput [to abstain from voting], where respondents who stated they did not know (TT) or did not answer (TJ) increasing significantly", said Vox Populi Research Centre Executive Director Dika Moehamad in a press release on Tuesday January 5.

Meanwhile the electability of the other political parties tended to be stable and three political parties experienced an increase in electability, namely the Justice and Prosperity Party (PKS), the Democrat Party and the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).

"The Democrats, the PKS and the PSI experienced an increased in electability while the other political parties slumped or were stable", said Moehamad.

The PKS' electability was 5.3 percent in June 2020 then rose to 5.6 percent in October and now in January has increased to 8.1 percent.

The Democrats' electability went from 3.4 percent in June 2020 to 3.3 percent in October then increased to 5.1 percent in January 2021.

The PSI's electability rose from 4.5 percent in June 2020 to 4.7 percent in October and now stands at 4.9 percent in January 2021.

The other political parties' electability meanwhile remained stable although the Golkar Party dropped from 14.1 percent in June 2020 to 8.7 percent in October and 8.4 percent in January 2021.

The National Awakening Party (PKB) went from an electability of 6.4 percent in June 2020 to 5.9 percent in October and 5.5 percent in January 2021.

The National Democrats (Nasdem) went from 4.3 percent in June 2020 to 3.8 percent in October and 3.6 percent in January 2021.

The United Development Party (PPP) went from 2.7 percent in June 2020 to 2 percent in October and 2.1 percent in January 2021.

The Vox Populi survey was conducted between December 26 and 31, 2020 by phone interview and involved 1,200 respondents representing all provinces in Indonesia who were selected randomly from an earlier survey.

The survey had a margin of error of approximately 2.9 percent and a confidence level of 95 percent.
