Bonfilio Mahendra Wahanaputra – An alliance of students which make up the Populist All Indonesia Student Executive Council (BEM SI Kerakyatan) has invited President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to appear before a people's tribunal that will be held near the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta on October 20.
The invitation was conveyed by BEM SI Kerakyatan Central Alliance Coordinator Abdul Kholik during a press conference following a protest action at the Horse statue near Monas on Friday September 30.
"We from the BEM Kerakyatan Alliance declare, one, give a warning to President Joko Widodo to appear before a people's tribunal on October 20, 2022 in Jakarta", said Kholik.
In addition to this, Kholik also made five other statements, namely demanding that the government prioritise the use of the state budget for the interests of the ordinary people in the mist of the economic crisis such as the fuel subsidy program, and resolve past cases of gross human rights violations by endeavoring to seek justice for the victims and their families.
"[We] reject the acquisition of infrastructure which according to social groups is unjust. Fifth, make changes to the KPK [Corruption Eradication Commission] Law by restoring the KPK as an independent state institution for the eradication of corruption", said Kholik.
Finally, rejecting the institutional and comprehensive commercialisation of education, particularly at tertiary education institutions.
After reading out the statement, the protesters from the BEM SI Kerakyatan disbanded, after which the police reopened Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat which had been earlier closed to traffic.
