Ardito Ramadhan, Jakarta – Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) recorded 791 corruption cases in Indonesia throughout 2023, involving 1,695 suspects.
ICW researcher Diky Anandya said this data shows that corruption cases in the country have increased significantly compared to previous years. "The increase that has occurred is very significant compared to previous years" said Anandya at the ICW offices in Kalibata, Jakarta, on Sunday May 19.
Even though the number of cases and suspects is increasing, the trend in potential state losses due to corruption in 2023 actually decreased.
Anandya said that potential state losses in 2023 stood at 28.4 trillion rupiah, a decline compared to 42.7 trillion rupiah in 2022. This figure is also smaller than the potential state losses in 2021 of 29.4 trillion rupiah.
"Even though there has been a decline compared to the previous two years, the potential for state losses in 2023 is still very high", said Anandya.
The monitoring of corruption cases was carried out by tabulating information on cases in 38 provinces and all districts and municipalities.
ICW monitors cases handled by the Attorney General's Office, the national police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) that have reached the criminal investigation stage.
Primary data sources were taken from the official websites of law enforcement agencies, while secondary data were taken from mass media reports at national and regional levels.
The following is ICW monitoring data on the number of criminal acts of corruption over the past five years:
- 2019: 271 cases, 580 suspects
- 2020: 444 cases, 875 suspects
- 2021: 533 cases, 1.173 suspects
- 2022: 579 cases, 1.396 suspects
- 2023: 791 cases, 1.695 suspects.
