Aida Ulim, Jayapura – Thousands of members of the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) took to the streets to hold a peaceful demonstration to commemorate National Farmers' Day (HTN) on Wednesday September 24.
The peaceful demonstration took place in the area of the Abepura traffic circle in Abepura district, Jayapura city, Papua province. During the action, the protesters demanded the closure of investments, an end to militarism and the resolution of human rights violation cases in Papua.
The protesters carried pamphlets reading "Stop violence against Papuans," "Papua is not empty land," "Stop the PSNs [National Strategic Projects] in Merauke and all of Papua" and "Stop deploying the military to Papua".
The masses also demanded justice for farmers throughout Papua, whose conditions are considered to have not improved, due to the large number of military personnel who have taken over their land.
They also asked for an end to all forms of violence and criminalisation in the process of allocating land owned by civilians to companies in the name of National Strategy Projects.
Currently, the demonstration is still ongoing with speeches being delivered by the protesters. The demonstration proceeded safely and peacefully under the watchful eye of security forces.
