United States President Donald Trump is trying to create famine in Cuba. Mass starvation and suffering of the Cuban people are the aims of Trump's latest emergency executive order banning Cuba, an island nation, from importing oil or any energy resources it needs to survive.

This is a harsh tactic designed to first, destroy the socialism that Cuba has built since 1959. Socialism that has provided inspiration to the working class and people around the world. Cuba is also a pioneer country that consistently carries out international humanitarian solidarity work.

Unlike capitalist countries such as Indonesia, Cuban workers and people enjoy free education and healthcare. Power is controlled by workers and the ordinary people directly through people's organisations.

Unlike Indonesia, no child has to commit suicide because they can't afford books and pencils, no child has to be poisoned because of the free school meals program (MBG), no child has to live by begging on the streets. In Cuba, no political elite benefit from government programs. Everything is dedicated to the progress of workers and the people.

Cuba saved thousands of lives during the Covid-19 pandemic with its medical brigades in more than 50 countries around the world; committed to supporting peace processes and opening the door to resolving armed conflicts; successfully fighting illiteracy and shared his methods throughout the world.

Cuba is a country that during the pandemic produced three vaccines against Covid-19 to protect its population, and has historically allocated resources to strengthen solidarity and internationalism with peoples in all corners of the world. Cuba also sent its medical team to help deal with the earthquake in Yogyakarta, Central Java, in 2006.

Second, it is an attempt to divert public attention from domestic problems in the US that are triggering a wave of mass resistance, as we saw with the attack on Venezuela, and are a prelude to an illegal military attack.

We, along with millions of people around the world, reject these inhumane actions against the Cuban people. This is not a national security policy; this is a deliberate act of economic warfare, aimed at strangling the entire Cuban population.

Donald Trump's executive order is part of a long effort by US imperialism to strangle and destroy Cuba. Under previous US administration, people in the US and Cuba welcomed moves to normalise relations between the US and Cuba. This was a welcome end to the outdated Cold War policies that have long dominated relations between the two countries.

Trump however has reversed the course initiated by the previous administration. An executive order dated January 29 labelled Cuba an unusual and extraordinary threat to the United States. This claim is clearly untrue but was used as a pretext to impose heavy economic sanctions on any country that tried to ship oil to or trade with Cuba.

The impact of this new executive order will be measured in human suffering:

  • Families will lose electricity for lighting, refrigerating food and cooking.
  • Hospitals will face an impossible choice, risking closing wards and stopping vital care.
  • Distribution of food and medicine will be paralysed.
  • The most vulnerable groups – children, the elderly and the sick will bear the brunt of these atrocities.

This policy cannot be morally justified. This deepens the humanitarian crisis in Cuba created by the US itself. Cuba poses no threat to the US. Forcing a population to submit through starvation is not diplomacy; it is a form of terrorism.

We call on all people of conscience to reject these brutal policies and demand an immediate end to the blockade, embargo and all forms of attacks. For more than 30 years, the UN General Assembly has annually, by an overwhelming majority, condemned the US's embargo on Cuba. Trump must carry out his foreign policy by respecting the will of the world's people and in accordance with international law.

We, the working class people in all parts of the world, want to have normal relations with Cuba, treat Cuba as an equal and with respect, and most importantly see Cuba and its people as neighbours, not enemies.

We also firmly reject the regime of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who are lackeys of imperialism, for failing to stand in solidarity with Cuba and instead follow Trump's policies, such as becoming a member of Trump's Board of Peace (BoP) on Gaza.

Let Cuba Live! Cuba is Not a Threat!
