Civil Society Coalition protests use of military to secure student protests in Jakarta

Jakarta – A grouping of students, including members of the University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM UI), who were holding a demonstration, were held up in the Tosari area on Jalan Sudirman in Central Jakarta on Friday afternoon until the evening on June 12.

They had originally intended to protest the administration of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka at the nearby Hotel Indonesia (HI) traffic circle. The action however was blocked by a joint force of National Police (Polri) and the Indonesian Military (TNI) in the Tosari area.
Media groups condemn intimidation against Floresa as attack on press freedom

Jayapura – Teras.id and 29 media partners across Indonesia have strongly condemned the acts of intimidation and terror against the Floresa.co editorial office. The terror and intimidation against Floresa represents a real threat to press freedom, the safety of journalists and democracy in Indonesia.

On Friday June 5 at approximately 8 am local time, a Floresa journalist found five broken chicken eggs scattered on the floor of a cafe managed by Floresa. The cafe is located directly next to the Floresa editorial office.
Reject the rushed and reckless revisions to the Police Law

Responding to the ratification of the Draft Law on the National Police (RUU Polri) at the House of Representatives (DPR) today, Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid, said:

"Today's ratification of the revisions to the RUU Polri should be criticised because it was carried out haphazardly by the DPR and the government. This legislative process was pushed through at excessive speed.
Civil Society Coalition rejects lightning fast enactment of Police Law revisions

Jakarta – The Civil Society Coalition for Police Reform rejects the rushed ratification of the Draft Law on the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia (RUU Polri).

In a statement, the Coalition said that the revised National Police Law (UU Polri) was drafted haphazardly without involving public participation. In addition to this, the material in the revisions to the law actually contains regulations that are contrary to the mandate and spirit of police reform.
