Peaceful action in Sorong marks 1961 Papuan Political Manifesto

Maria Baru, Sorong – Hundreds of Papuans from various organisations held a peaceful action to commemorate the Political Manifesto Day for Papuan independence in Sorong City, Southwest Papua, on Monday December 1.

The crowd gathered at four points: the Sorong Ramayana Mall, the Km 10 traffic lights, the Malanu Anda Kios and on Jalan Baru (Puri Bridge). They then marched to the main action point at the Elin shop traffic lights in Sorong city.
Marking 64 years since Papuan Political Manifesto, KNPB reflects on past and future

Aida Ulim, Jayapura, Jubi – The West Papua National Committee (KNPB) commemorated the 64th anniversary of the West Papuan independence Political Manifesto on December 1, by reflecting on what the KNPB has done and what it will do in the future.

KNPB spokesperson Ogram Wanimbo stated that in commemorating the manifesto, the KNPB is holding a series of events including exhibitions, music performances, discussions and talk shows on the history and future of the Papuan nation, beginning with a prayer service.
Walhi denies extreme weather main cause of North Sumatra deadly floods

Jakarta – The North Sumatra chapter of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) believes the flash floods that have hit several areas recently were not solely the result of extreme weather.

Walhi North Sumatra Executive Director Rianda Purba said the floods were also the result of massive forest destruction and land conversion. According to Walhi's records, over the past 10 years 2,000 hectares of forest in North Sumatra have been damaged.
Government urged to declare national emergency to tackle floods in Sumatra

Jakarta – The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) and the western regional Legal Aid Foundation (LBH) are urging the administration of President Prabowo Subianto to immediately declare a national disaster emergency status in response to the massive floods that have hit Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra.

"Declaring a national disaster emergency status is important so that the focus of disaster management also becomes the responsibility of the central government", read an official LBH written statement on Monday December 1.
