Poki: I'm not afraid! I'm a tough kid. Nyem... nyem...
Parents: Is Poki dreaming? Is she delirious?
Cat: A monolog?
Most viewers have dismissed Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka's video monolog on youth's crucial role in realising the government's much touted vision of Golden Indonesia 2045 as overly flowery, lacking substance and an exercise in attention seeking.
Indonesia is currently in the midst of a demographic bonus, with the productive-age population outnumbering the non-productive, a window of opportunity expected to last until around 2045, when the country celebrates 100 years of independence.
In the six-minute video posted on his YouTube channel @GibranTV on April 19, Gibran specifically addresses the country's younger generation, emphasising that this demographic advantage is a once-in-a-generation chance and "you guys are the deciding factor [...] who can answer to the growing challenge" globally.
"We are not afraid of challenges, we are tough fighters. We just need a reason to believe", the 37-year-old said in his first video appearance since taking office.
By Tuesday the video titled The Young Generation, Demographic Bonus and the Future of Indonesia had amassed some 1.1 million views attracting nearly 150,000 dislikes, surpassing its 120,000 likes. The comment column meanwhile, which reached almost 40,000 postings, was also filled with negative sentiment.
Shortly after this, the number of dislikes on the YouTube account was hidden.
According to University of Indonesia political observer Aditya Perdana, the negative sentiment in response to the video was likely related to lingering resentment over last year's presidential election and Gibran's call for the younger generation to work hard, which is the exact opposite of what Gibran has done.
"So it encourages people to work hard, but the one who conveyed it was Mas [Brother] Gibran who did not do that, the criticism was more in that direction", Perdana explained.
Gibran's path to the vice presidency was only made possible due a Constitutional Court ruling that lowered the age threshold for presidential candidates. The controversial ruling, issued during the administration of his father, former president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, was authored by then chief justice Anwar Usman, Widodo's brother-in-law, who was later removed as chief justice over ethical violations related to the ruling.
