Poki: Grook, ZZZ. KRRR. Grook. Nyem... Nyem.
Father: You're asleep already but still noisy, you're breaking my concentration.
Poki: ZZZ (newspaper reads "Retired TNI officers call for leader to be replaced").
On 17 April a group calling themselves the Retired Indonesian Military (TNI) Soldiers Forum released a statement demanding that President Prabowo Subianto remove Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka as his deputy. The statement, signed by 100 former TNI officers, including former vice president Try Sutrisno, argued that Gibran should be ousted because his nomination as a vice-presidential candidate was unconstitutional.
Gibran's election has always been controversial. His father, former president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, stands accused of influencing the Constitutional Court through his brother-in-law, Chief Justice Anwar Usman (and Gibran's uncle), to issue a ruling that lowered the age threshold for presidential candidates which allowed Gibran to run as Prabowo's running mate in 2024.
In addition to 'removing' Gibran, the veterans also demanded Prabowo to dismiss cabinet members linked to Widodo, a return to the original 1945 Constitution and the cancellation of signature infrastructure projects that have been declared "national strategic projects" (PSN) by Widodo, including his flagship new capital city (IKN) project in East Kalimantan.
While this is not the first time there have been calls to impeach Gibran, and Prabowo does not have the Constitutional authority to sack him, this is the first time that the Palace has been forced to respond to such demands, and only did so because it was made by military veterans, including Prabowo's allies.
There is also speculation that the call may have been made to remind Prabowo that he needs to show Widodo who's the boss in the wake of a number of recent media reports suggesting the former president still has a lingering influence on Prabowo's cabinet and his ministers.
