Speaking at the National Cooperative Day celebrations in the Senayan area of Jakarta on July 12, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said that those who think Indonesia has a bleak future should look for another country to live in.
In the speech, Prabowo expressed his belief that Indonesia is rich in natural resources and will rise up and become great. "Those who are doubtful, please just sit at home. Those who feel that Indonesia is bleak, if you want, look for another country. Please, no one is stopping you", said Prabowo on Sunday.
The former army general, whose father-in-law the late president Suharto ruled Indonesia with an iron fist for 32 years and has repeatedly accused critics of being unpatriotic or foreign stooges, also invited all elements of the nation to abandon the culture of insulting, hating and distrusting each other.
"Let us return to Indonesian's nature of forgiving, understanding, loving, helping each other, not participating in the culture of insults, envy, and suspicion", he said.
Prabowo added that a nation will not succeed if it is trapped in conflict. Differences in ethnic backgrounds and political choices, according to the president, should not be a reason to become enemies.
"Why should we fight? We are one family, regardless of our backgrounds, ethnicities, or parties. All parties have many patriots and also many scoundrels", said Prabowo.
