Jayapura – The government plans to build new security posts in a number of conflict areas in Papua. But the policy is considered not to be the right solution.
One of the political figures in the land of Papua, Laurenzus Kadepa, says that what must be done is to re-evaluate security policies in the land of Papua. Not instead planning to establish new security posts.
Kadepa made the statement in connection with a meeting between the Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai, the Central Papua governor and a number of regents from the province that was held in Bali on June 6.
One of the discussions at the meeting was a plan to facilitate the construction of military posts in conflict-prone areas in Central Papua so soldiers do not have to occupy facilities owned by civil society.
Kadepa however believes that what the government must do is halt the security approach in the land of Papua, including the planned construction of new military posts.
"What must be done is to encourage a security evaluation in the land of Papua. Not adding new posts", Kadepa said when speaking with Jubi by phone Tuesday June 10.
According to Kadepa, for a long time various groups have questioned the security approach policy in the land of Papua, because a security approach is not considered to be the solution.
"We have to be honest with ourselves and the people. The plan for the construction of new military posts in conflict-prone areas planned by the government is not quite right. In fact, it will add trauma to communities", he said.
Kadepa said that the central government, provincial governments and regents in the land of Papua, whose territory is included as conflict-prone areas should be wise and learn to listen to the aspirations of the people and victims.
"There are already many victims of the Papua conflict. Victims come from all groups, don't pretend not to know", he said.
Earlier, Natalius Pigai said there are currently a number of TNI (Indonesian Military) and Polri (Indonesian Police) guard posts in the Central Papua region, especially Intan Jaya and Puncak Jaya regencies, which use churches and klasis (regional church houses).
"The governor and the regents also conveyed the matter of the posts development plan that they will facilitate, including later looking for land so that they can be used as a place to establish guard posts both for the TNI and Polri", Pigai said in a written statement on Saturday June 7.
