Jakarta – Hundreds of people from the Free Palestine Network (FPN) held a demonstration in front of the United States Embassy in Jakarta on Friday afternoon June 20. This action was a form of protest against Washington's military support for Israeli aggression in the Palestinian territories.
The crowd brought Palestinian and Indonesian flags, posters and unfurled two large banners that read "Stop Genocide in Palestine!!!" and "USA, UK, Germany, France, Stop Arming Israel!".
FPN Secretary General Furqan highlighted the increase in violence by Israel which is not only occurring in the Gaza Strip, but also in other areas such as the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iran.
"Even as tensions rise with Iran, Israel continues to massacre Palestinians. Every day, tens to hundreds of civilians are killed, including those who are waiting in line for food aid", Furqan said.
According to Furqan, Israel's brutal actions are inseparable from logistical and military support from the US and its allies in Europe. Furqan said that 80 percent of the weapons used by Israel came from the US.
Furthermore, he expressed his frustration with the UN, which he considers to be paralysed and unable to pass a ceasefire resolution, because it is always obstructed by the US's veto. "That is why we call on all civil organisations in Indonesia to jointly pressure Western countries to stop their military aid to Israel and stop the genocide in Palestine", he stressed.
Furqan also added that solidarity actions were not only carried out in the capital of Jakarta, but were also held simultaneously in a number of cities such as Medan, Palembang, Pekanbaru, Bogor, Bandung, Kendari, Majene, Makassar and Surabaya.
"This movement will continue to be massively inflamed until Palestine is free and the violence is stopped completely", Furqan asserted.
His emphatic call was directed at all components of civil society to join in the struggle to uphold the rights of Palestinian citizens. "We must build national solidarity to reject this cruelty and fully support Palestinian independence", he said.
Furqan also used the occasion to urge the Indonesian government to take a global leadership role by forming an international anti-imperialism front and reviving the spirit of the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference.
"Among all the participants at the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference (KKA), Palestine is the only one that has not yet gained full independence up until now. Therefore, Palestinian independence is a historical mandate that we must complete together", he added.
Data from the Gaza Ministry of Health has recorded that as of June 19, 2025, 55,701 people have been killed and 130,101 injured since the conflict peaked on October 7, 2023. The majority of victims are women and children.
On the other hand, estimates by the medical journal The Lancet suggest that the number of victims may be far greater than that. Based on historical analysis of armed conflicts, indirect deaths due to infrastructure damage, lack of medical services and starvation can be four times higher than direct casualties.
"If a conservative ratio of four to one is applied, the actual death toll could reach hundreds of thousands", the journal wrote.
The FPN emphasised that international public pressure is the key to stopping the ongoing crimes against humanity in Palestine.
