Aida Ulim, Jayapura – Protesters who were planning to hold a "Papua Military and Humanitarian Emergency" demonstration in Jayapura City, Papua, were involved in a clash with the police in the Waena area of Heram district on Monday April 27.

From Jubi's observations on the ground, the chaos broke out when protesters who had gathered at the State Housing Company (Perumnas) III in Expo and the Tolikara Dormitory were about to head off to the Abepura traffic circle in Abepura district, which had been planned as the location for the action.

Their protesters however was intercepted by the police and para-military Mobile Brigade (Brimob) in front of Zipur in Waena. Although there were negotiations between demonstrators and the police, they could not reach an agreement.

The two parties then began pushing and shoving each other which led to chaos. Security forces then fired tear gas, which protesters responded to by throwing stones at police.

The protesters tried to escape by running in various directions to avoid being shot at with tear gas. Some of the protesters ran towards the Perumnas I, Perumnas III and Expo Waena, while others scattered in the Waena area.

As of posting this report, the situation at the location is still under the guard of joint security forces.

"Papua Military and Humanitarian Emergency" demonstrations have taken place simultaneously in various regions today. There has been no information yet from the relevant authorities about why police blocked the protesters.
