Jayapura – Teras.id and 29 media partners across Indonesia have strongly condemned the acts of intimidation and terror against the Floresa.co editorial office. The terror and intimidation against Floresa represents a real threat to press freedom, the safety of journalists and democracy in Indonesia.
On Friday June 5 at approximately 8 am local time, a Floresa journalist found five broken chicken eggs scattered on the floor of a cafe managed by Floresa. The cafe is located directly next to the Floresa editorial office.
Twenty minutes later, at approximately 8.20 am, a Floresa editorial staff member found a plastic bag right in front of the Floresa office door. At the time, the editorial staff member ignored it. At approximately 11.30 am a Floresa journalist picked up the plastic bag from the door and discovered it contained three decomposing chicken heads.
It remains unknown who sent the chicken head and broken eggs, as neither the cafe nor the Floresa editorial office has surveillance cameras.
However, it is strongly suspected that the chicken head and eggs were sent as a form of terror against the Floresa editorial staff. Furthermore, on May 13, Floresa editor received an intimidating message from someone claiming to be a member of the National Police (Polri) Criminal Investigation Bureau (Bareskrim) Cyber Crime Directorate.
In the message, the person sent personal information, including their home address, and requested the removal of three pieces of content on Floresa's social media accounts about the film Pesta Babi (Pig Feast).
The person wrote: "We believe this content has the potential to cause unrest and a negative situation, both digitally and in the field. Given the current negative national situation, we hope you will take down the posts in question as a measure of good faith to maintain the stability of the political, legal and security situation in Indonesia".
The person also said: "If the content in question is not removed soon, the process will be escalated to the next stage in accordance with the provisions on national mitigation measures as necessary".
This intimidation and terror is a concrete threat to the journalistic work of Floresa. Floresa has long been known as one of the most critical and vocal media outlets in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in responding to public issues.
These actions can also be categorised as obstruction of journalistic work, which is punishable by a maximum prison sentence of two years and a maximum fine of 500 million rupiah, as stipulated under Article 18 paragraph (1) of Law Number 40/1999 on the Press.
The terror against the Floresa editorial team threatens the press's function as a tool of control and oversight of power. Furthermore, these actions could undermine the public's interests and rights to access quality news and information.
