Jakarta – An Indonesian military (TNI) officer who had same-sex relations with another officer has been found guilty of committing deviant acts by a military tribunal in Surabaya, East Java. As a result, the officer has been dishonorably discharged and jailed.

The verdict in the case was set out in a ruling by the Surabaya III Military Tribunal on its website on Wednesday October 6.

The case began in 2018 when the perpetrator became a member of the TNI. He subsequently arranged meetings with another TNI officer though social media. The meetings changed to become more intimate.

The pair decided to have a same-sex relationship in August 2018. The deviant individual's relationship was eventually found out by his commander and he was thrown in jail to await legal proceedings.

The Surabaya III Military Tribunal handed down a sentence of six months in prison and the perpetrator was discharged from the TNI for violating Article 62 of Law Number 34/2004 on the TNI.
