Himawan, Makassar – Hundreds of workers in Makassar, South Sulawesi, held a protest action to commemorate International Labour Day on Wednesday May 1.

The workers gathered and parked large trucks under the flyover blocking the road connecting Jl. AP Pettarani and Jl. Urip Sumoharjo in Makassar city.

I Wahyu Setiawan Nugroho, Yogyakarta – A joint action organised by the 2019 May Day Action Committee has again called for decent wages for workers in the Central Java city of Yogyakarta.

Andita Rahma, Jakarta – Two journalists from Tempo – photo journalist Prima Mulia and a freelance journalist Iqbal Kusumadireza – were assaulted by police when they were covering the commemoration of International Labour Day in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung on May 1.

Chitra Paramaesti, Jakarta – The Media and Creative Industry Trade Union (Sindikasi) articulated the rights of workers in the creative industries during a commemoration of International Labour Day or May Day on May 1 by holding a creative and environmentally friendly action.

Bandar Lampung – Commemorating International Labour Day or May Day, around 600 workers from various different trade unions took to the streets of Bandar Lampung in South Sumatra on Wednesday May 1.

The workers concentrated at three points in the city: the Adipura Monument, Saburai Enggal Park and the Korpri North Teluk Betung Park.

Walda Marison, Jakarta – A number of journalist organisations from the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) held a demonstration to commemorate International Labour Day in Jakarta on May 1.

Stepanus Purba, Medan – Hundreds of workers held a protest action in front of the North Sumatra (Sumut) governor’s office in Medan on Wednesday May 1.

Jakarta – According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) there were as many as 1,586 disasters in Indonesia between January and April 2019, an increase of 7.2 percent compared with 2018.

Wahyu Setiawan Nugroho, Yogyakarta – At least three different groups of demonstrators joined the commemoration of International Labour Day in the Central Java city of Yogyakarta, which was centred along the Malioboro shopping district and the zero kilometre point at the central post office.

Chandra Iswinarno – A commemoration of International Labour Day which was held at the Imbi Park in Jayapura, Papua, was only allowed to proceed for around 30 minutes. Nevertheless, the protesters who came from the Papuan Labour Movement (GBP) were still able to articulate a number of demands.

The commemoration of Labour Day or May Day in the Central Java city of Yogyakarta was centred at the Zero Kilometre point in front of the Central Post Office. Along with the hundreds of protesters, students from the Papuan Student Alliance (AMP) used the rally to call for independence.

Jakarta – Smoke from flares and fireworks marked the end of the commemoration of International Labour Day or May Day 2019 at the Arjuna Wijaya or Horse Statue in Central Jakarta on Wednesday May 1. The masses of workers from various trade unions and federations began to disband at around 5.15 pm.

Ristu Hanafi, Sleman – The commemoration of International Labour Day or May Day in the Central Java city of Yogyakarta was marred by the torching of a police post located at the intersection in front of the Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN) on Jl. Laksda Adisutjipto, Sleman.

Two hundred protesters held an action commemorating May Day 2019 or Labour Day on May 1 which was centred in front of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh. The action also included a motorcycle convoy around the city.

Jakarta – A number of people who said they came from the group PT Freeport Striking Workers joined the May Day commemorations in Jakarta today demanding that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo fulfill the promise he made to the workers on February 13.

Pramono Putra, Sidoarjo – Thousands of workers from various cities in East Java held a joint demonstration commemorating International Labour Day on the morning of Wednesday May 1. The action began with a convoy to the East Java governor’s office in the provincial capital of Surabaya to convey their demands at this year’s May Day.

Semarang – Hundreds of students, ordinary people and social groups joined the Indonesian Trade Union Congress Alliance (KASBI) and took to the streets of the East Java provincial capital of Semarang on Wednesday May 1 to commemorate International Labour Day.

Denpasar – Hundreds of protesters from the Balinese United Labour Movement (GBBB) alliance commemorated International Labour Day or May Day with a peaceful action in front of the Bali governor’s office in the provincial capital of Denpasar on Wednesday May 1.

Muhakir Tamrin, Palu – Scores of students in Palu City, Central Sulawesi, took to the streets on Wednesday May 1. The students, who were from the Central Sulawesi People’s Struggle Front (FPR) Alliance, conveyed their demands at a protest in front of the governor’s office on Jl. Sam Ratulangi.

Friski Riana, Jakarta – The Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) will not join other workers rallying in Jakarta during the commemoration of May Day or International Labour Day on May 1.
