[The following is an abridged translation of a statement by the United Socialists (Perserikatan Sosialis, PS) in response to Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's January 11 public statement in which he officially acknowledged that gross human rights violations have taken place in Indonesia and expressed his regret over these incidents.]

Jakarta – Maria Katarina Sumarsih, the mother of one of the victims of the Semanggi I incident, Bernardinus Realino Norma Irmawan or Wawan, says that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's statement on past gross human rights violations is nothing more than image building.

Dian Erika Nugraheny, Jakarta – Human rights activists have cast doubts on President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's pledge to settle 12 cases of gross human rights violations acknowledged by the government through legal or judicial channels.

Singgih Wiryono, Jakarta – Amnesty International Indonesia insists that the only way to prevent human rights violations from happening again is by trying the perpetrators in court.

Jakarta – A victim of the 1965 gross human rights violations, Bedjo Untung, is urging President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to revoke all legislation inherited from former president Suharto's New Order (Orba) regime that discriminate against victims of the 1965 killings.

Jakarta – The Civil Society Coalition, which is made up of 55 different organisations, has issued an ultimatum to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and the House of Representatives (DPR) demanding that they revoke Government Regulation in Lieu of Law Number 2/2022 on the Job Creation Law (Perppu Ciptaker) within the next seven days.

Jakarta – The Labour Movement with the People (Gebrak) held a protest action in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Jakarta on January 10 to articulate its opposition to the recently issued Government Regulation in Lieu Of Law (Perppu) to replace the Omnibus Law on Jobs Creation.

Singgih Wiryono, Jakarta – The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) and human rights civil society organisations have expressed their condolences over the death of Siti Dyah Sujirah (Sipon), the wife of People's Democratic Party (PRD) activist and poet Wiji Thukul.

Jakarta – Siti Dyah Sujirah or Sipon died today on Thursday January 5. She was the wife of People's Democratic Party (PRD) activist and poet Wiji Thukul, who was disappeared in 1996 for his frequent and harsh criticism of Suharto's New Order regime.

Anggi Muliawati, Jakarta – Indonesian Human Rights Watch (Imparsial) found there were 26 cases of intolerance recorded by the media as occurring in Indonesia in 2022. Imparsial revealed that West Java (Jabar) is the region with the highest number of cases of violations of religion and belief (KBB).

Adhyasta Dirgantara, Jakarta – Indonesian Legal Aid and Human Rights Association (PBHI) Chairperson Julius Ibrani says that law enforcement officials have a special team tasked with criminalising critical and opposition groups in Indonesia.

Nirmala Maulana Achmad, Jakarta – The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) has highlighted cases of human rights violations that have followed the same pattern in 2022 as in previous years.

YLBHI Chairperson Muhammad Isnur said that the same model was used by the government when was attempting to steal community land.

Jayapura – The commemoration of International Human Rights Day on December 10 was marked by protest actions across Papua. In many places rallies had only just began when police disbursed the actions. Scores of people were arrested and detained at local police stations.

Adrial Akbar – Indonesian Trade Union Congress Alliance Confederation (KASBI) Chairperson Nining Elitos is calling for outstanding cases of human rights violations in Indonesia to be fully resolved.

Jakarta – The families of the victims of the Paniai massacre are disappointed with the panel of judges which handed down a verdict of not guilty against retired Infantry Major Isak Sattu at the Makassar District Court in South Sulawesi.
