Jakarta – The secretary general of the Legal Mafia Eradication Committee, Husin Shahab, has reported two Greenpeace activists to the Jakarta Metro Jaya regional police using the Information and Electronic Transaction Law (ITE Law).

The Greenpeace activists were reported for saying that statements made by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's during speech at the GOP26 climate conference in Glasgow were incorrect.

Shahab believes that Greenpeace's statements harmed many parties so he decided to report them to the police because he considers that Greenpeace has been spreading hate speech.

"Criticism which is correct, accurate, now that's criticism. If it isn't correct, it can be fake news, right. Yes, (they were reported using) the ITE Law because several parties feel that they were harmed", said Shahab when contacted by CNN Indonesia on Sunday November 14.

Shahab has shared a copy of the police report receipt Number STTLP/B/XI/2021/SPKT/Polda Metro Jaya, which shows that Shahab reported Leonard Simanjuntak and Kiki Taufik from Greenpeace.

He reported the two Greenpeace members for producing fake news which created an uproar. Shahab also said that the pair spread the information with the aim of creating feelings of hatred or hostility.

Shahab reported the two activists under Articles 14 and 15 of the Criminal Code as well as Article 28 Paragraph 2 in conjunction with Article 45A Paragraph 2 of Law Number 11/2008 or the ITE Law.

CNN Indonesia has contacted Metro Jaya regional police public relations head Brigadier General Yusri Yunus to confirm the accuracy of the report. Yunus responded by saying that he has not yet checked the report.

CNN Indonesia also tried to get a comment from Simanjuntak but have not yet received a response.

Earlier, Greenpeace criticised several statements by President Widodo which he made during a speech at the GOP26 conference in Glasgow, Scotland. They said that Widodo's claims were incorrect.

Greenpeace refuted Widodo's statement on carbon emissions, forest fires and deforestation in Indonesia saying that Widodo's remarks were "empty talk".

"It can be said that Jokowi's claims in their entirety are empty talk", said Greenpeace Indonesia forest campaign spokesperson M. Iqbal Damanik during a press conference on Tuesday November 2 held to respond to Widodo's speech at the COP26. (dhf/agt)
