Jakarta – The Labour Movement with the People (GEBRAK) is urging the government and House of Representatives (DPR) to pass the Draft Law on the Protection of Domestic Workers (RUU PPRT).

This was conveyed in an action commemorating International Human Rights Day which was held on Jalan Merdeka Selatan in Jakarta on Wednesday December 10.

"A law that guarantees protection for them, a regulation that guarantees their welfare has still not been passed by the government to this day", said a speaker from the command vehicle.

The protesters also criticised DPR members who are considered to have failed in carrying out their functions as representatives of the people.

In addition to this, the protesters also brought demands for the release of activists who were arrested during the demonstration at the end of last August.

"Release the 1,038 political prisoners [arrested] during the August 2025 demonstrations", read one of the banners brought to the rally.

A number of activists were arrested following the demonstrations at the end of August. They were arrested for allegedly inciting anarchist acts.

They include Lokataru Foundation Director Delpedro Marhaen, Lokataru Foundation staff member Muzaffar Salim, Gejayan Calling activist Syahdan Husein and Riau University student and Student Challenge Alliance activist Khariq Anhar.

They will undergo their first court hearing on December 16. (fra/mnf/fra)
