Prabowo talks resilience at BRICS while Indonesia's land and forests burn

President Prabowo Subianto attended the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, on September 12-13 with a message of resilience, sustainability and inclusive global growth. At the forum, Prabowo emphasised the importance of turning vulnerability into strength and strengthening food and energy security.

Amid this message however, the forest and land fires that are currently engulfing a number of regions in Indonesia were not part of the President's main message. For Walhi, this situation shows that there is a gap between the resilience narrative brought to global forums and the need to build ecological resilience within the country.
Bandung students mark Black September with 'Indonesia Emergency' action

Mochammad Iqbal Maulud – Students from various universities affiliated with the West Java chapter of the All-Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM SI) staged a protest titled "Indonesia in a State of Emergency" (Indonesia Gawat Darurat) on Friday September 11.

Cantered at the intersection of Jalan Ir. H. Djuanda (Dago) and Cikapayang in Bandung, the demonstration caused traffic in the area to become congested.

Dini Suciatiningrum, Jakarta – Amnesty International Indonesia strongly condemns the military education and training (diklat) program policy for citizens and students arrested following the August 27 protests in Jakarta.

Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid emphasised that sending citizens and students to military barracks simply for participating in a demonstration sends the wrong message to the public – that the right to express opinions through demonstrations is something wrong.

Jayapura – The Papua Law Enforcement and Human Rights Coalition (KPHHP) is urged the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, to immediately order the National Police Chief (Kapolri) to thoroughly investigate the Molotov cocktail attack on the Papua Representative Office of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) in Jayapura, Papua, as well as previous acts of terror targeting the Papua Legal Aid Institute (LBH Papua), the Jubi editorial office and journalist Victor Mambor.

The call was issued by KPHHP in press release number 021/SP-KPHHP/IX/2026 dated September 9, 2026.
